I’ve worked in the copier industry for over 25 years. The majority of that time has been spent managing salespeople. The biggest challenge I’ve incurred was trying to get the salespeople to propose the equipment that best met the customers’ needs and not their own. Unfortunately, it turned out to be an exercise in futility. No matter how hard I tried to change them, salespeople continue to steer customers to the equipment that resulted in the most commission for them, never really taking the customers’ needs into consideration. On top of that, I would receive complaint after complaint from customers feeling harassed, mislead, deceived and even outright lied to by the salespeople.
After recognizing the problem, I knew the only solution was to remove the salespeople from the equation. Shortly after graduating from Penn State, I went to work for a local copier dealer. The plan was to stay there for a few months while I looked for a different job. 33 years later, I’m now President of that same dealership!
